JB: Dunton Green Station - Location Test Shots

On Monday, December 28th 2015 I visited Dunton Green Station, one of our chosen locations, in order to film some test shots and to gain further knowledge of the track, as well as considerations regarding which lenses we choose to shoot our video on.One of the main technical aspects I wanted to test was which lens would be most ideal to shoot on. To test this, I used both the Canon EOS 700D and the Canon EOS 650D with two different lenses - the 50mm f1.8 and the 24mm f2.8. As there is some artificial lighting already in the tunnel, it was unlikely that having a low enough ‘f number’ would be an issue, yet this did rule out the ‘kit lens’ 18-55mm at f3.5-5.6 as this lens wouldn’t allow us to achieve the depth of field effects we wanted either.

It was clear from the test shots that the 24mm lens was substantially better for the majority of our shots due to its much greater field of view, however the 50mm would be effective for other handheld shots during the shoot, such as facial reactions/non-verbal language of the actor. Having two cameras like this on the day would be greatly beneficial, as it would allow us to experiment with the two cameras without constantly swapping lenses.

Another aspect I wanted to test was the ease of use and setup of the track and dolly, which proved to be very simple. With each track section measuring 1.5m, we are aiming to use five pieces on either side to achieve a total track length of 7.5m, at approximately 0.6m wide. One consideration we will have to bear in mind when filming is the noise produced by the track, as it is not completely silent (which is largely due to the uneven surface of the tunnel floor). This will mean that we either do not use diegetic sound from the footage, or we record it elsewhere when the track is not moving and use that instead.

DO'B/JB/ EH: Pitch

Feedback

Strengths:
  • Good research and locations with Tesco + Tunnel
  • Tesco effective for cinematography with The Shining Child
  • Good difference between Tunnel + Domestic Sphere
  • Credits on cereal boxes
  • Already written to supermarket
  • Interesting lighting, overlit bright/stark supermarket contrasting to dark tunnel
  • Diegetic sound throughout very interesting
  • Clear links between research and concept
  • Technical confidence and planning
Questions:
  • Little visuals of villain and is not at supermarket and appears in tunnel scene and is obscured by shadow.
Suggestions:
  • Interaction with him in the supermarket: woman drops box in supermarket, villain picks up and walks off - enigma code?

Next Steps
  • We need to consider how we can show the villain in a seemingly innocent way unknown to the character.
  • We need to complete audience research in our target audience to see what else they might like to see, or to gauge their thoughts on ideas we have had
  • Start our storyboarding process
  • Follow-up with Tesco location

DO'B: Technical Analysis The Shining (Kubrick, 1980)

I have chosen The Shining (Kubrick, 1980) as my material for technical analysis as the shot styles are similar to that which I wish to create. As well as this the narrow locations mimic those I plan to use.

Editing Overview
  • Low cut rate
  • Prevalence given to boy
  • Intercutting to build relationships between characters
  • Continuity editing gives the idea that it is point of view
Camera Overview
  • Mostly central and symmetrical framing
  • Few close ups
  • Large use of mid shots and long shots
  • Steadicam with track creates fluidity
Sound Overview
  • Mostly diegetic
  • Strings build tension
  • Cymbals stress the significance within scene
Mise-en-scene Overview
  • Breaking of rule of thirds creates a central viewpoint
  • Costume - primary colours draw attention
  • Body language - curious and infantile
  • Character blocking - back turned on camera

In response to my research I have chosen to mimic and adapt the style of The Shining. Incorporation of flamboyant colours in locations with a muted colour palette will help draw attention to important signifiers. I plan to create centralised and symmetrical shots in response to my technical analysis. I aim to borrow a track in order to sustain the appearance of a point of view as well as ensure steady and consistent shots.

Technical Information
  • Rule of three centralises the child
  • Costume - primary colours attract attention
  • Character blocking - back turned
  • Rule of three - colours of floor and walls create a grid.
  • Establishing shot
  • Sound only from the diegetic world creates tension and includes the audience.
  • Long shot slightly off centre depicts the restlessness of the boy.
  • The industrial setting offsets the playful nature of the boy.
  • Symmetry creates leading lines
  • Steadicam gives the appearance of point of view
  • Breaks signature central shot
  • Continuity editing creates the illusion of consistency
  • Canted angle
  • Mid shot stresses importance of door as it brings you closer
  • String music develops tension
  • Shot Reverse Shot between boy and door creates tension
  • Props such as bins and plants gives authenticity to location
  • Body language expresses curiosity
  • Focus entirely on the door
  • Camera flat facing
  • Intercutting between this shot and the one above acts as foreshadowing.
  • Blue wash gives a supernatural undertone to the shot
  • Long shot forces viewer to focus in the very centre of shot
  • Harsh lighting becomes soft and comforting building up to the sudden discovery of the twins.
  • Intercutting between these two shots highlights the boy's emotions.
  • High cut rate creates a frantic nature to the scene which puts pressure on the situation.
  • An eruption of cymbals sound when the boy encounters the twins which exemplifies the significance.
