- An ominous hand can be seen holding a doll, with the hand in focus in the shot. The background being more blurry due to the shallow depth of field.
- A panning shot will start the shot off, with the background floor being in focus, then moving over to the hand with the doll.
- The hand will then grasp into the doll and puncturing it suddenly with the figure’s sharp nails, the non-diegetic music becoming louder in the sound mix and intensifying as the doll is suddenly impacted. A violin with a high-pitched discordant sound could also be highly appropriate for the scene, creating tension and shock.

I constructed a simple storyboard for a scene that I believe would be effective in revealing a death of a character (and its cause) to the audience.
The use of blood running from a character’s head is a traditional mise-en-scene aspect that is regularly used in horror films, and the surrounding crowd of people shows how by occurring in a domestic environment (e.g. a street), the public get involved in issues themselves.
The layout for this scene is very similar to that of a 2013 Transport For London advertising campaign, in which the death of a motorcyclist is revealed to promote motorcycle safety. Although not from a horror/thriller film, this advert is particularly effective in that the audience are given a sense of the situation and are also held partially in suspense during the situation reveal. This scene could be adapted to portray a violent crime or attack, rather than a crash situation and would suit our genre well.
DO'B: Mid-Long Shot
This scene depicts a girl wearing traditional clothing sitting between two trees amongst two severed limbs, I have chosen this shot to storyboard as it demonstrates a large number of skills within the technical codes.
Mise-en-scene:
- Prosthetics - severed limbs are characteristic of the horror genre as they suggest someone has deceased.
- Costume - traditional dress is common in horror films such as The Woman in Black (Watkins, 2012) and The Shining (Kubrick, 1980).
- Character - young children, most often girls, are used to create an unnerving environment, films such as Mama (Muschietti, 2013) put children in vulnerable positions to produce fear in parents and children.
- Location - forests and woodlands are used within the horror genre as they are familiar to the majority and turning the environment hostile.
Camera work:
- Shot length - the mid-long shot helps to exhibit the location.
- This shot will once filmed track outwards slowly to create an unnerving sense of insecurity.
- The shot is flat facing in an attempt to recreate the signature style of Stanley Kubrick.
